ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Justice Athar Minullah has emphasized the need to learn lessons from history and said that if freedom of expression was recognized, Pakistan would not have been divided and neither would the political leaders have been divided.
The only solution is to implement the constitution, the judge said that by implementing the constitution, Pakistan can become a great country.
Addressing a seminar, he said that half of Pakistan’s history is covered by dictatorship where exercise of freedom of expression was impossible.
A judge of the highest court of Pakistan has described freedom of expression as the most important part of society, which should never be suppressed. States cannot control freedom of expression, he declared.
Justice Minullah said that in 1971, a completely different picture was presented to the people in West Pakistan. In 75 years everyone knew what the truth was but suppressed it, he remarked and lamented that by doing so, Pakistan as a nation had reached this point.
The Supreme Court judge also touched on the issue of provincial autonomy, saying many forces were against the 18th Amendment – the changes introduced to revive the spirit of the Constitution and devolve powers to federal units. It is also for building an office.
The Supreme Court judge praised the role of journalists in promoting freedom of expression and said that he had learned a lot from court reporters.
