Supreme Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa is poised to be sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) today (Sunday) following the retirement of his predecessor, Umar Ata Bandial, one day earlier.
The oath-taking ceremony will be conducted at the President House in Islamabad, with President Dr. Arif Alvi officiating. The event is expected to be attended by high-ranking government officials, dignitaries, including military personnel, caretaker federal ministers, senators, and foreign ambassadors.
Justice Isa’s tenure as the country’s Chief Justice, however, will be relatively short, as he is scheduled to retire from this position on October 25, 2024.
Having taken the oath as a judge of the apex court on September 5, 2014, Justice Isa has not been assigned any constitutional cases for the past three years despite his status as the senior puisne judge. This hiatus in his constitutional assignments followed a presidential reference filed against him in 2019.
