Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Officers Concerned About Proposed Amendments to Police Act 2017

Police officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are worried about the proposed changes to the Police Act 2017. They are concerned that these amendments, aiming to limit police powers, will lead to increased political interference and negatively impact the performance of the police force.

According to sources, the amendments were presented in a cabinet meeting without informing the inspector general of police, who vehemently opposed them during the meeting. The IGP’s strong stance against such actions that would harm the police department is a clear indication of the internal resistance within the force.

The senior police officers opposed the amendments during the cabinet meeting, but despite their reservations, the cabinet approved the amendments. They are deeply concerned that these changes will not only transform the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police into a politically influenced entity but also erode the professionalism and autonomy that the Police Act 2017 was intended to uphold.

However, the provincial government has defended the proposed amendments, arguing that these changes are necessary to enhance oversight and make the police more accountable to the public.

The Police Act 2017 was introduced to grant greater autonomy to the police force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, viewed as a significant step towards creating a more professional, accountable, and transparent police force.

A delegation of police officers met with Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to discuss their concerns and reservations, and he assured them that their reservations and concerns would be carefully considered before any legislation is passed.
