North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his country to remain prepared for nuclear attacks at all times, warning that joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are expanding and pose a threat to the nation’s security.

In a statement released by state media KCNA on Monday, Kim accused the two countries of increasing the scale of their drills, including the use of American nuclear assets. Over the weekend, North Korea conducted military exercises aimed at enhancing its “war deterrence and nuclear counterattack capability.”

The drills featured a ballistic missile that flew 800 km (497 miles) before hitting a target at an altitude of 800 m (0.5 miles) using a mock nuclear warhead. Kim oversaw the test and stated that such drills were essential to improve the military’s actual war capability and prepare for an immediate and overwhelming nuclear counterattack against any enemy moves.

He emphasized the need to increase North Korea’s nuclear war deterrence exponentially to counter the growing aggression of its enemies. KCNA photos showed Kim attending the test with his young daughter, and the missile hitting the target with a roaring flame.
