The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has approved a bill introduced by Law Minister Aftab Alam to boost the perks for provincial ministers. Under this new law, ministers will receive Rs1 million to renovate their government-provided homes and are allowed to buy items like carpets, curtains, air conditioners, and refrigerators.
If a minister lives in a private house, they will also get a monthly rent allowance of Rs200,000. The assembly had initially proposed this increase in October.
The bill faced strong criticism from the opposition, who argued it goes against the promises made by leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Opposition leader Dr. Ibadullah Khan from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) questioned how PTI lawmakers could justify this move to their supporters and emphasized the contradictions in their policies. He pointed out that while the government claims to struggle financially, they are granting themselves greater benefits, increasing the house rent for ministers from Rs70,000 to Rs200,000.
