Lebanon Takes Israeli Ceasefire Violations to the UN

[post-views]

Lebanon has formally approached the United Nations, accusing Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreed in November 2024 and urging the Security Council to step in. In a complaint submitted on Monday, Beirut called on the UN to pressure Israel to halt its attacks, fully withdraw from Lebanese territory, and respect the country’s sovereignty.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry said the violations amount to a clear breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. According to the complaint, Israeli forces carried out more than 2,000 violations of Lebanese airspace and territory over just three months late last year, with incidents rising steadily from October to December.

The filing came a day after Israeli air strikes across Lebanon killed at least two people. Despite the ceasefire, near-daily Israeli attacks have continued, claiming hundreds of lives since late 2024 and displacing tens of thousands from border areas. Israel also continues to occupy several points inside Lebanon, blocking reconstruction and preventing residents from returning home.

Lebanon further accused Israel of holding Lebanese prisoners and refusing to disclose their identities, leaving families in anguish. It also condemned repeated Israeli fire on UN peacekeepers, urging the Security Council to act decisively, warning that continued inaction risks further destabilising an already fragile region.
