The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has undergone a notable about-face, renouncing its previous stance and opining that former President Donald Trump should not be shielded from E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit.
Carroll’s lawsuit revolves around her grave accusation of sexual assault against Trump, a claim he vehemently denies. With the DOJ’s reversal, the path is now clear for the civil lawsuit to proceed to trial in January.

Previously, the Justice Department had advocated for the notion that Trump’s denial of Carroll’s allegations fell within the realm of his official duties. However, recent developments have compelled a shift in their position. In a letter addressed to the attorneys representing Trump and Carroll, DOJ lawyers conveyed that they have “determined that it lacks adequate evidence” to substantiate the assertion that Trump’s disputed statements were made within the scope of his employment or in service to the United States government.
