Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House on Friday to discuss matters of mutual interest and explore opportunities for cooperation between the two countries across various sectors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the Libyan delegation and expressed Pakistan’s intent to strengthen bilateral ties. “It is a pleasure to host you. We look forward to enhancing our collaboration in multiple fields,” the prime minister said. In response, Lt Gen Haftar thanked the prime minister for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Minister for Defence Production Raza Hayat Hiraj, Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Tauqir Shah, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and other senior officials.
Later the same day, Lt Gen Haftar also met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ). According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the discussions focused on evolving regional security dynamics, defence cooperation, and shared strategic interests. Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration in the defence industry and exchange technical expertise to address contemporary security challenges.
Upon arrival at GHQ, Lt Gen Haftar laid a floral wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Monument) to honour the sacrifices of Pakistan Army personnel. He was given a ceremonial guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army.
The Libyan commander’s visit comes against the backdrop of recent unrest in Libya. In May, Tripoli witnessed its worst clashes in years following the killing of a prominent militia leader. The violence subsided after the Libyan government announced a ceasefire two days later.
