Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming prime minister, has pledged to “win” the trade war with US President Donald Trump, following his decisive victory in the race to succeed Justin Trudeau.
In a statement to supporters, Carney, the former Bank of England governor, declared: “Americans should make no mistake: in trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.” He vowed to implement retaliatory tariffs on US goods until “Americans show us respect.”
Carney, who has never held elected office, won the leadership race with a commanding 86% of the vote and is set to be sworn in as prime minister in the coming days. With his new role, Carney is expected to call for a swift general election, though recent polls show the Conservative opposition still holds a lead, albeit narrowing.
This marks a significant shift in Canadian leadership after Justin Trudeau resigned in January, following a nine-year term as prime minister.
