A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck western Afghanistan on Saturday, resulting in at least one fatality and dozens of injuries, according to authorities.
Officials have expressed concerns that the casualty count may increase due to reports of landslides and the collapse of buildings in the affected areas.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Herat, the largest city in the region. Following the initial quake, there were five aftershocks recorded with magnitudes of 5.5, 4.7, 6.3, 5.9, and 4.6.
As the tremors began at approximately 11:00 am local time (0630 GMT), residents and shopkeepers in the city fled their buildings, resulting in 25 injuries and one confirmed fatality, as stated by a spokesperson for the Taliban government.
