Australia’s Mitchell Marsh expressed readiness to shift to the number three position in the batting order should his teammate, opener Travis Head, make a comeback for their World Cup match against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Head had suffered a left hand fracture in South Africa the previous month but has rejoined the squad in New Delhi, where the five-time champions are aiming for their third victory in five matches.
Marsh, who delivered strong performances with scores of 121 and 52 in his last two outings, mentioned that a decision on Head’s participation would be made later on Tuesday.
“He looked good, did some range-hitting last night,” Marsh shared with reporters. “He says the hand feels good. So, I’m sure if he’s fit, he’ll be available for selection in the team.”
Should Head return as David Warner’s opening partner, Marsh would happily take up the number three position, a role he’s familiar with.
“I’m very comfortable moving back to three. I’ve batted there extensively over the last couple of years, so I feel right at home in that position.
“And if and when Heady comes back in, I believe that’s the best position for me to play for this team.”
Considering the upcoming challenge, Marsh emphasized that underestimating the Dutch side would be unwise, given their surprising victory against South Africa earlier in the tournament.
“We’ve reiterated numerous times during this tournament that there are no easy games.
“Tomorrow is no exception for us. We hold the Netherlands in high regard, as they’ve been playing excellent cricket, and it will undoubtedly be a tough match.”
