National Assembly Speaker Challenges Supreme Court Ruling on Reserved Seats

In a recent statement, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq expressed concerns about the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats, citing the amended Election Act 2017 as a factor that renders the ruling “incapable of implementation.” The ruling, which favored the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, had granted the party eligibility for reserved seats in the national and provincial assemblies. However, Sadiq highlighted amendments to the Election Act, particularly in Sections 66 and 104-A, which he believes are relevant for the Election Commission’s consideration.

According to Ayaz Sadiq, these amendments, along with the retrospective effect of the Amended Election Act from 2017, now take precedence over the previous Supreme Court ruling. Therefore, Sadiq argued that the Supreme Court judgment is now incapable of implementation, emphasizing that the Amended Election Act should prevail and supersede the prior ruling.
