Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The National Assembly has put a halt to a proposal aiming to raise the number of judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. During a recent session chaired by Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, Senator Abdul Qadir presented the motion, citing the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court due to a shortage of judges. There was speculation that the intention behind the proposal was to provide a majority to a specific camp within the government.

Other motions proposed included amendments to the Constitution and laws related to dual nationality and contempt of court. Furthermore, a bill seeking to increase the number of Supreme Court judges was introduced by PML-N’s Daniyal Chaudhry but was postponed for further consideration.
