Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has assumed the helm of Bangladesh’s interim government following weeks of turmoil that led to the resignation and departure of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Tasked with restoring stability to the country, Yunus, known as the “banker to the poor” for his pioneering work in microcredit, aims to guide Bangladesh through the recent wave of violence and oversee upcoming parliamentary elections.

Upon his return to Dhaka from medical treatment in Paris, Yunus expressed optimism for the nation’s future, emphasizing the potential for Bangladesh to thrive. He acknowledged the vital role played by student protesters in shaping the country’s path and emphasized the need to move forward together as a united nation.

With the recent upheaval following Hasina’s departure, incidents of violence and unrest have occurred, including attacks on Hindu homes and temples. The appointment of Yunus as chief adviser, along with 13 additional advisers, took place at a ceremony held at the official presidential residence, where a solemn moment of silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives during the protests.

In response to the evolving situation, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Yunus and affirmed India’s commitment to collaborating with Bangladesh for the mutual well-being and security of both nations’ citizens. The interim government does not include Hasina’s Awami League party, but efforts to engage in dialogue with the opposition and the interim government are underway.

Yunus’ remarkable journey from pioneering microcredit to assuming a position of national leadership underscores the potential for positive change and reconciliation in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
