ISLAMABAD — The joint opposition has announced a nationwide movement against the 27th Constitutional Amendment starting Friday, moments after the National Assembly approved the bill with a two-thirds majority amid an opposition walkout.
Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, addressing a joint press conference at Parliament House, declared the amendment an attack on the Constitution and the judiciary. Achakzai said the opposition was open to dialogue, but only on the restoration of what he termed the “stolen mandate.”
Barrister Gohar criticised the ruling PML-N and its ally PPP for passing the legislation “in haste and for personal gain.” He said the new clauses under Article 260 reduced the Chief Justice’s post to a “musical chair,” transferring authority between the Supreme Court and the proposed Federal Constitutional Court.
The PTI chief warned that while rulers may seek legal immunity, they cannot avoid public accountability. He vowed to repeal the amendment if PTI returns to power, calling it “a structural blow to Pakistan’s democratic framework.”
