In a strong rebuttal to recent speculation, the Pakistan Army has denied reports suggesting that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir is poised to become the country’s next president. Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, dismissed the rumors as “completely baseless” during an interview with The Economist.

The federal government had also previously rejected similar rumors last month. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a post on X, said that authorities are fully aware of the elements behind the malicious campaign aimed at President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the Chief of Army Staff. He clarified that there has been no discussion about the president resigning or the COAS seeking to assume the presidency.

Minister Naqvi further quoted President Zardari as saying, “I know who is spreading these falsehoods, why they are doing so, and who stands to benefit from this propaganda.” He emphasized that the government views the campaign as politically motivated and misleading.

DG ISPR reiterated that the “sole focus” of COAS Field Marshal Asim Munir is Pakistan’s strength and stability, with no political ambitions involved. He reaffirmed that the Army leadership remains committed to national defense and internal security rather than political maneuvering.

When questioned about rising tensions with India, DG ISPR issued a clear warning of a robust and potentially unconventional response to any Indian military aggression. He emphasized that Pakistan would not hesitate to start from the eastern front if provoked.

He concluded by cautioning India, stating, “They need to understand that they too can be targeted anywhere,” signaling Pakistan’s readiness to safeguard its sovereignty under all circumstances.
