Pakistan Bans High-Octane Fuel for Official Vehicles Amid Austerity Drive

[post-views]

The government of Pakistan on Monday imposed an immediate ban on the use of high-octane fuel in all official vehicles, as part of a broader push to reduce public spending and enforce austerity measures.

The decision follows a sharp increase in petroleum levy, with high-octane fuel prices rising by Rs200 per litre. Under the new policy, government departments are strictly prohibited from using such fuel at the state’s expense. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, if its use becomes unavoidable, the cost must be paid personally by the concerned official rather than the government.

This move is part of wider cost-cutting efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif. Earlier steps included a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption for official vehicles and the grounding of nearly 60 percent of the government fleet. All federal institutions have been directed to ensure full and immediate compliance.

The austerity measures come as Pakistan prepares for potential economic strain caused by rising global oil prices and tensions in the Middle East. The government has also introduced energy-saving initiatives, including a proposed four-day workweek, to ease pressure on national resources during this uncertain period.
