The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast that the ongoing heatwave will continue across most regions of the country throughout the week, driven by a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.

According to Monday’s weather advisory, daytime temperatures are expected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal in the southern regions—including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan—from May 20 to May 24.

In the northern and central parts of the country—covering areas such as Islamabad, central and upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—temperatures are forecasted to soar 5 to 7°C above the seasonal average during the same period.

The PMD also warned that intense heat could trigger isolated dust storms and gusty winds, particularly in the plains, as dry and hot conditions persist.

Safety Advisory During the Heatwave:

  • The public—especially children, the elderly, and women—are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated.
  • Avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and take measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
  • Farmers should plan agricultural activities cautiously and ensure adequate care for livestock.
  • Higher temperatures in the northern areas could accelerate snowmelt, potentially impacting water flow and availability.
  • The public is advised to use water wisely across all sectors.

Authorities at all levels have been asked to stay alert and implement necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with the extreme heat.
