Pakistan Needs a Broad Political Consensus as per Constitution

There is widespread public debate concerning the alleged agreement between Imran Khan and the establishment. First, it is important to note that the term “deal” might not be the most appropriate description in political discourse. In democracies with weaker political structures, conflicts often arise between political factions, the establishment, and other non-political entities, leading to the necessity for resolution by the law and constitution.

If all parties involved in the political discord adhere to their constitutional boundaries, it would be more apt to characterize it as constitutional negotiations rather than a mere deal. This adherence is not just a suggestion, but a crucial requirement for the stability and progress of Pakistan’s political landscape. Should the establishment in Pakistan fulfill its constitutional responsibilities, the judiciary operate based on merit, and political parties be elected in accordance with the will of the people, it would represent not merely a deal, but a significant agreement serving the cause of upholding the rule of law, democracy, and constitutionalism.

For this reason, Pakistan requires a political consensus where all parties fulfil their roles, with the foundation of this consensus deeply rooted in the principles of law and the constitution. The people’s will, expressed through the election of governments, is a powerful force that should not be underestimated. Any negotiations that adhere to democratic principles, respect the will of the people, and operate within the confines of law and constitution would understandably garner widespread support from the public.
