Pakistan Seeks US Support to Boost Power Sector Growth

[post-views]

ISLAMABAD, Dec 9 – Pakistan has requested support from the United States to engage the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in removing obstacles hindering the sustainable growth of the country’s power sector. The development followed a meeting between Power Minister Awais Ahmed Leghari and US Ambassador Natalie Baker on Monday.

During the discussion, Minister Leghari highlighted the recently launched Surplus Power Package, aimed at providing competitively priced electricity to industrial consumers and stimulating investment. He requested US assistance in extending this package to greenfield industries to further drive industrial growth.

The meeting also addressed reducing inefficiencies in power distribution, improving recoveries, and cutting technical and commercial losses. Ambassador Baker commended Pakistan’s reforms and the government’s efforts in managing circular debt through data-driven measures.

Investment opportunities for US companies, especially in power transmission and hydropower projects, were discussed. Leghari reiterated that future power generation will be led by the private sector, with the government no longer procuring power, and encouraged global investors to explore energy storage and pumped-storage hydropower solutions.

The minister also briefed GE Vernova on privatization plans for distribution companies (Discos) and initiatives such as AMI meter deployment, inviting technical and investment collaboration to advance Pakistan’s sustainable energy transition.
