ISLAMABAD: The government has announced the Wheat Policy 2025-26, aimed at protecting farmers’ incomes and strengthening national food security, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office said on Sunday.
Under the plan, federal and provincial authorities will procure 6.2 million tons of wheat from the 2025-26 crop at Rs3,500 per maund, aligning domestic prices with international import levels to ensure fair profit margins for growers.
Sharif said the policy was designed to “ensure food security for the people of Pakistan” while addressing the hardships faced by farmers. The move comes weeks after devastating floods in Punjab wiped out nearly 30 percent of the nation’s wheat stocks.
Pakistan, the world’s eighth-largest wheat producer, yielded 31.4 million tons last year but faces an 8 percent decline in 2025 output, according to the USDA. Agriculture contributes 24 percent to GDP, underlining the sector’s vital role in the economy.
A national committee led by Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain will oversee implementation, ensuring free inter-provincial movement of wheat and coordination among all provinces.
