On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of Pakistani citizens in Sudan is the government’s utmost priority, as the conflict in the North African state rages on with indications of a resolution looming on the horizon.
According to witnesses, the clashes between the forces of two competing generals eased in certain areas of Sudan’s capital by Friday evening, following repeated appeals for a ceasefire to end the week-long conflict during Ramadan.
Since the fighting began on Saturday between the forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (also known as Hemeti) who commands the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), more than 400 people have lost their lives, with thousands more injured.
On Friday, the army declared that they had agreed to a three-day ceasefire to allow citizens to celebrate Eid ul Fitr and for the unobstructed provision of humanitarian aid.
In a statement, the Prime Minister affirmed that the government was closely monitoring the situation in Sudan and taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of Pakistani citizens. Pakistan’s embassy in Sudan was in constant communication with the 1,500 Pakistanis living in the country and was providing them with all possible support and assistance.
Furthermore, the embassy had created a WhatsApp group to stay in touch with the Pakistani citizens who were advised to remain indoors.
