During the launch event for BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, in partnership with Mega Motor Company in Pakistan, Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb outlined the government’s comprehensive plan to drive economic stability through private sector investment, export-led development, and foreign direct investment (FDI).

The decision by BYD to establish a factory in Karachi is a promising sign of Pakistan’s success in attracting FDI. It also reflects BYD’s anticipation of profitability due to factors such as a vibrant market, cost-effective labor, and potentially lower taxes. This could make their electric vehicles more competitive domestically and internationally, bringing potential benefits to Pakistan’s economy.

The remarks also referenced Pakistan’s GSP Plus status with the European Union (EU) and whether the electric vehicles manufactured in Pakistan by BYD would be eligible for zero-rated or preferential tariffs in the EU market. However, the focus was on the pressing need for reform in Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly around the power sector, to overcome the challenges and ensure a sustainable future.

The event also highlighted BYD’s global expansion plans, including setting up plants in countries like Thailand and Pakistan, and emphasized the company’s broader vision of environmental responsibility and technological innovation.

Accordingly, the Finance Ministry, Federal Board of Revenue, and other relevant authorities were urged to conduct a thorough review of the agreement with BYD. This is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the public’s interests and preventing potential issues akin to those seen with contracts signed with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
