As part of the ongoing structural reforms under Pakistan’s IMF program, the Ministry of National Food Security is working to create a comprehensive strategy for deregulating the wheat market, all while safeguarding strategic reserves and ensuring food security.

This new approach aims to move away from traditional procurement practices, instead introducing innovative solutions to manage wheat reserves in a more flexible, deregulated market.

To ensure all relevant parties are involved, the ministry plans to consult with a wide range of stakeholders, including provincial governments. A key event in this process will be the ‘National Workshop on Deregulating the Wheat Sector’, set to take place in Islamabad on January 24. According to Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for National Food Security and Research, the workshop underscores the government’s commitment to both ensuring food security and reforming the agricultural sector to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.

Representatives from all four provinces have been invited to present their strategies, addressing key challenges and offering practical solutions for managing wheat reserves and securing the nation’s food supply.

In a statement, the Ministry of National Food Security reaffirmed its dedication to implementing sustainable agricultural reforms that benefit all stakeholders and contribute to long-term food security.
