PM Shehbaz, Malaysian Leader Discuss Rising South Asia Tensions, Call for Calm

[post-views]

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke by phone on Sunday with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the growing tensions in South Asia following the recent Pahalgam attack.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif voiced Pakistan’s deep concerns over what he described as India’s provocative actions in the aftermath of the incident. He firmly rejected any attempt to link Pakistan to the Pahalgam attack without solid evidence and renewed Pakistan’s call for a transparent, internationally led investigation.

“Pakistan would welcome Malaysia’s participation in such a probe,” Sharif said, underscoring Pakistan’s consistent condemnation of terrorism and commitment to regional peace. He also emphasized that Pakistan, having been a frontline state in the fight against terrorism, has paid a significant price in its counterterrorism efforts.

Sharif expressed worry that India’s aggressive posture was pulling Pakistan’s focus away from vital security operations along its western border.

“It’s simply not credible to suggest Pakistan’s involvement at a time when we are fully focused on economic recovery,” he added, noting Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to stabilize its economy after a severe crisis.

The two leaders also reviewed bilateral ties, pledging to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. Sharif expressed his intention to make an official visit to Malaysia later this year to further deepen relations.

The call reaffirmed the strong, long-standing relationship between Pakistan and Malaysia, with both leaders agreeing to stay in close contact on key regional and international issues.
