PM Shehbaz Sharif Announces Further Electricity Tariff Cuts Amid Ongoing Sector Reforms

[post-views]

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday that electricity tariffs will be further reduced for both domestic consumers and industries as part of ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s power sector. During a review meeting on the power sector, the prime minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of the reforms, noting that they are delivering positive outcomes.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing affordable and environmentally friendly electricity to the public. A key aspect of the reforms includes revising agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which not only benefit the national economy but also contribute to lowering electricity costs for consumers.

Sharif also addressed the ongoing campaign against power theft, pledging to intensify efforts to eliminate distribution company losses caused by pilferage. He pointed out that the appointment of reputable private sector board members in electricity distribution companies is helping improve their performance.

The prime minister highlighted the reduction in electricity transmission losses as a clear sign of the reforms’ success. The meeting also revealed that the recovery rate of distribution companies had improved to 93.26% by December, thanks to the reforms and the anti-theft drive.

Progress on major power infrastructure projects was also discussed, including the 500 kilowatt Mitiari-Moro-Rahim Yar Khan and Ghazi Barotha-Faisalabad transmission lines. Additionally, updates were provided on the dissolution of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company and the establishment of the new Energy Infrastructure, Development, and Management Company (EIDMC).

PM Sharif directed that all ongoing reforms and projects be completed within their designated timelines.
