PMD warns of exceptionally high floods in Punjab’s rivers

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a red alert, warning of very high to exceptionally high floods in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers between Tuesday and Thursday if water is released from Indian reservoirs.

Punjab is already reeling from its worst floods in decades, with over two million people affected and more than 2,000 villages inundated. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that 760,000 people and 516,000 animals have been evacuated, while at least 33 people have died in less than a week.

The PMD warned of exceptionally high flood levels in Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala and very high flows in Chenab at Panjand between September 4 and 5. Indus at Guddu is forecast to reach very high flood levels on September 6 and 7. Authorities have been directed to remain on round-the-clock alert and take all necessary mitigation measures.

The Met Office has also predicted torrential rains in Lahore, Gujranwala, and upper catchments of Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers from September 1 to 3, raising fears of urban flooding across Punjab.
