ISLAMABAD: In a move of political collaboration, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have reached a decision to appoint a politician as the coveted caretaker prime minister. A list of five potential candidates has been shortlisted for the role, as reported by The News on Saturday.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif clarified that he was not offered the position. He revealed, “The PPP and the PML-N have together finalized four to five names, which will be discussed with other parties. Within a week, a final choice will be made.”

Asif emphasized that the leadership of allied parties would ultimately make the decisive call. In his perspective, holding elections within 90 days would be favorable, a timeline that aligns with their interests. “I believe the assemblies will dissolve two days before their tenure ends. Leaving the assembly field vacant would have created significant challenges,” he added.

Furthermore, he made it clear that he had neither proposed nor expressed any desire for Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to be considered for the caretaker prime minister position. The selection process is underway, and in due course, the nation will witness the chosen leader to guide them through this transitional phase.
