In a recent address to the National Assembly, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the vital role of political input in shaping the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year. He expressed the significance of political participation in achieving the targets set out in the budget, stating that without such input, the intended relief for the people would be unattainable.

Bilawal highlighted the importance of understanding ground realities, which he believes politicians across the board are more attuned to than the bureaucrats in Islamabad. He stressed that a budget formulated without political input would essentially serve the interests of bureaucrats, and he voiced his party’s commitment to breaking free from this traditional approach.

The PPP, a key ally of the PML-N, has been vocal about its reservations regarding the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Following multiple rounds of discussions, sources indicated that the PML-N has acceded to the demands put forth by the PPP.

During his address in the National Assembly, Bilawal underscored that politicians would not advocate for imposing taxes on essential items like milk and stationery in a country where 40% of the population suffers from stunted growth and 26 million children are out of school. He attributed such propositions to bureaucratic influences rather than genuine political considerations.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts in slightly reducing inflation, Bilawal expressed the need for greater relief measures aimed at providing direct benefits to the common people. He further highlighted the issue of climate change, emphasizing the importance of addressing this matter seriously for the sake of future generations.

In addition, Bilawal criticized the use of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for political purposes, advocating for the abolition of NAB in line with the party’s manifesto. He characterized NAB as an entity that undermines political institutions and democracy, calling for a reevaluation of its role in the political landscape.
