President asks for strategy to address challenge of mental health issues

President Dr Arif Alvi has expressed concern about the growing problem of mental health in Pakistan. He has called for a comprehensive strategy to address the issue, involving the government, NGOs, psychiatric associations, and civil society.
He noted that 24% of the country’s population is facing mental health issues and that 60% of college and university students are under stress.
He called for an increase in the number of mental health professionals and for steps to improve the capacity of existing professionals.
He commended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between an international NGO and a private media group to raise awareness about mental health.
