Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a federal cabinet meeting today to review and approve the draft of constitutional amendments. These amendments are slated to be presented in the National Assembly at a later date.

Concurrently, a special committee of the Parliament, led by Syed Khurshid Shah from the People’s Party, is set to convene at 2 pm today. The committee’s agenda includes discussions on proposals regarding constitutional amendments and judicial reforms. It is anticipated that a draft on the latter will be presented during this session, which aims to foster consensus between government and opposition members on these crucial matters.

Originally scheduled for 10 am at the Parliament House, the meeting was rescheduled at the committee’s request to allow additional time for resolving key matters following their morning session. Consequently, the National Assembly’s meeting time was adjusted from 11:30 am to 4 pm as well, following the committee’s recommendation which was approved by the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, together with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, have met to deliberate on the current political situation and the proposed constitutional amendments. This meeting took place in Bilawal’s chamber at the Parliament House, with Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar also partaking in the discussions.

In a significant political development, PM Shehbaz held a late-night meeting with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Discussions during the meeting covered constitutional amendments, with Maulana Rehman requesting time to consult with his party before making a decision. Later, he declined to lend his support after reviewing the proposed amendments.

Following this, a government delegation including Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss judicial reforms and the proposed amendments.

During a dinner hosted by the prime minister in honor of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) and coalition parties, including MQM, BAP, and the National Party, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar shared some details of the proposed constitutional amendment.

The amendments aim to reform the judiciary and constitutional institutions, including extending the tenure of Supreme Court judges and establishing a five-member constitutional court to handle constitutional matters and alleviate the burden on the Supreme Court.

PM Shehbaz emphasized the need for stability and called for boycotting forces that hinder it. He highlighted the significance of legislation in the national and public interest, urging Parliament members to work diligently for the country’s progress.

The government asserts a two-thirds majority in support of the amendments and claims to have rectified any flaws in the 19th Constitutional Amendment.

The proposed amendments also strive to include a parliamentary committee in the Judicial Commission and to address the appointment of the Chief Justice.
