Pakistan’s new Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, wasted no time in addressing two critical issues facing the nation: national security and economic reform. During his first visit to the General Headquarters, PM Sharif pledged his government’s unwavering support in fulfilling the resource requirements of the armed forces. This public commitment assures the military of continued financial backing to maintain operational readiness in the face of ongoing security threats.
The official press release following the visit remained tight-lipped on the discussion of the economic crisis. However, the implicit assurance of continued military spending suggests that the government may prioritize defense over potential budget cuts in other areas.
Prime Minister Sharif underscored the vital role of the armed forces in ensuring Pakistan’s peaceful rise on the global stage. He commended the military’s professionalism, operational readiness, and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
In a separate meeting, PM Sharif met with the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome. This discussion focused on areas of potential cooperation, particularly regarding Pakistan’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The US reiterated its support for continued economic reforms pursued through the IMF. This meeting coincided with the ongoing second review of Pakistan’s current Stand-By Arrangement with the IMF.
While securing the release of the last tranche under this existing program is the immediate focus, the new Finance Minister has hinted at Pakistan’s intention to advocate for a larger, long-term program with the IMF during the review process.
Beyond the IMF discussions, PM Sharif highlighted his government’s commitment to implementing macroeconomic reforms to stabilize the economy and attract foreign investment. He emphasized the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council, a body established to expedite foreign investments in key sectors of the Pakistani economy.
The broader discussion with the US Ambassador encompassed various areas of potential collaboration, including regional security, trade and investment, education, climate change, and fostering private sector-led economic growth. Prime Minister Sharif called for regular engagement through existing dialogue mechanisms to strengthen cooperation in these crucial areas.
The US envoy reaffirmed America’s recognition of Pakistan as an important partner and expressed hope for a stronger bilateral relationship. Notably, the US embassy’s statement following the meeting highlighted US support for Pakistan’s democracy and the role of an independent press.
In a separate development, PM Sharif launched a nationwide spring tree plantation drive, urging the public to actively participate in this environmental initiative. He announced an ambitious goal of doubling the number of saplings planted in 2024 compared to the previous year.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of increasing Pakistan’s forest cover to combat the detrimental effects of climate change. He directed concerned authorities to ensure the plantation drive reaches every corner of the country, aiming to make Pakistan a greener and more sustainable nation.
