Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), under the leadership of Chairman Gohar Khan, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) to challenge the recently approved Elections (Second Amendment) Bill, 2024. The petition, filed under Article 184(3) of the Constitution via lawyer Barrister Salman Akram Raja, urged the SC to declare the bill “null and void.” The bill, which restricts independent candidates from joining another political party after a constitutionally and legally defined period, was presented by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Talal Chaudhry in the National Assembly and later passed by the Senate.

This development came after the Supreme Court, acknowledging PTI’s growing influence, declared the party eligible to receive reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the national and provincial assemblies and also recognized PTI as a parliamentary party.
