The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has declared its intention to resist any upcoming constitutional amendments the government proposes.
During a recent parliamentary vote on the contentious 26th Constitutional Amendment, the party expressed its disagreement by walking out of the session. PTI leaders voiced concerns that the new amendment would grant Parliament excessive authority over the judiciary, particularly in appointing Supreme Court judges and the Chief Justice.
These comments follow reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto discussed a potential “27th constitutional amendment.” PTI’s Sheikh Waqas Akram made it clear during a segment on Geo News’ “Geo Pakistan” that the PTI would oppose not only the 27th but also any future amendments.
Akram criticized the government for its heavy-handed tactics against PTI lawmakers, asserting that if they were not afraid, they wouldn’t resort to such measures. He questioned why calls for consensus only arise when it involves the PTI, and he defended Bushra Bibi, stating she has no political ambitions and reaffirmed the party’s stance against family involvement in politics.
He stressed that the party’s priority lies in advocating for the release of its leader.
Regarding concerns about Faisal Chaudhry’s removal from the party’s legal team, Akram clarified that Salman Akram Raja leads the legal committee, and expressed his respect for Chaudhry, stating he hasn’t been retained for the cases involving Imran Khan or Bushra Bibi.
Addressing his own situation on a private TV channel, Chaudhry explained that he filed a petition upon the direction of PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. He emphasized his commitment to his clients, noting, “If I can’t deliver, my client has the right to choose another lawyer,” and reaffirmed his loyalty after receiving Khan’s approval to proceed with the petition.
