Punjab’s Information and Culture Minister, Azma Bokhari, conducted unannounced inspections at several theatres in Lahore, including Mehfil Theatre, Prince Theatre, and Tamaseel Theatre, where she issued show-cause notices to five actors for violating standards.
During her visits, the minister checked the cafeterias, dressing rooms, and halls of the theatres to assess the overall cleanliness and operational standards. She expressed dissatisfaction with the poor hygiene and management practices at these venues and raised concerns about the “inappropriate” songs being played and the “indecent” attire worn by female performers. Bokhari emphasized that any form of vulgarity or obscenity would not be tolerated in Punjab’s theatres.
As a result, show-cause notices were issued to actors Sajan Abbas, Neeli, Saima Khan, Nayab Khan, and Sonu Butt for their involvement in the performances. The minister further warned that any future violations of theatre guidelines could lead to lifetime bans for the offenders.
Bokhari also voiced frustration over the performance of officials from the Punjab Arts Council, urging all stakeholders to take responsibility for improving the theatre environment. While she made it clear that she did not want to harm anyone’s livelihood, she also stated that those undermining the theatre culture would no longer be allowed to continue their work in Punjab.
The minister called on theatre owners to focus on producing high-quality dramas with meaningful themes, ensuring that the public receives wholesome and enriching entertainment.
