Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently hosting the annual BRICS summit in Kazan, a city in southwestern Russia. This three-day meeting marks the largest assembly of world leaders in Russia in decades, coinciding with ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, which is backed by Western nations.
BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was established in 2006, with its first summit taking place in 2009. The alliance aims to counter Western economic and political dominance and convenes annually, with the current summit being the 16th.
In 2023, BRICS opened its doors to Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, inviting them to join the alliance. Although Saudi Arabia has not yet formally joined, the others have accepted the invitation. Argentina was also invited but declined after its new president opted to strengthen ties with the West.
Around two dozen world leaders are present at the summit, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Notable attendees include leaders from the UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia, as well as those from countries interested in closer ties with BRICS, like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled his attendance due to an injury, and Brazil’s Foreign Minister is representing the country instead. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also participate, despite criticism from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding his attendance.
The summit’s central discussion revolves around a shared disillusionment among BRICS nations regarding Western-dominated global governance, particularly economic matters. The sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine have raised concerns among many developing countries about potential Western financial coercion.
Experts note that, in light of ongoing conflicts, Russia and China are seeing a rise in anti-Western sentiment. BRICS countries are looking to reduce their reliance on the U.S. dollar and the SWIFT financial system, with discussions about utilizing national currencies for trade and exploring alternative payment systems.
The BRICS summit holds immense importance for Putin as Russia faces increasing isolation since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Numerous sanctions from Western nations have compounded Russia’s difficulties, and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin. Against this backdrop, the summit serves as a platform for Putin to demonstrate that Russia is not without allies; major emerging powers like India and China are present, showcasing a united front.
BRICS continues to expand, with interest from several Southeast Asian nations eager to join, further underscoring a global trend toward diversifying partnerships rather than aligning solely with Western powers.
