Putin Wraps India Visit, Trade in Focus

[post-views]

Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his official visit to India with a banquet at the president’s house in Delhi, where he had earlier received a ceremonial guard of honour. During the visit, he held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attended a business forum, and announced the launch of Russia Today, a Kremlin-funded state-controlled media network.

The visit projected strong optics, reinforcing India-Russia ties amid Western diplomatic isolation of Moscow following the Ukraine war. However, few major announcements emerged, with trade agreements dominating discussions. The two countries signed deals on economic cooperation, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, shipping, civil nuclear energy, visa facilitation, and maritime training. Plans were also outlined for a five-year framework targeting $100 billion in bilateral trade and progressing India’s potential free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union.

Oil supplies remained a key topic. Putin reiterated Russia’s readiness to ensure uninterrupted fuel shipments, highlighting India’s role in supporting Russia’s sanctioned economy. Defence cooperation saw no new major agreements, though ongoing deliveries of S-400 systems and discussions on future fighter jets continue quietly.

The visit underscored India’s balancing act between Moscow and Washington, while focusing on expanding commercial engagement, trade diversification, and long-term economic partnership rather than headline-grabbing deals.
