Researchers sound the alarm on harmful nanoparticles in everyday foods

Cornell and Binghamton Universities’ experts have warned that nanoparticles found in common food colourings and anti-caking chemicals can be harmful to your digestive system, causing health issues in your intestines. The findings were published in the journal Antioxidants.

According to the senior author Elad Tako, associate professor of food science at Cornell, “We are consuming these nanoparticles every day. We don’t know how much we consume or the long-term effects of this consumption. This research helps us understand the effects of nanoparticles on gastrointestinal health and development.”

The Binghamton researchers have previously overseen in vitro cellular evaluations and tested various nanoparticles used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The team focused on a specific type of metal oxide nanoparticle and validated the safe doses for consumption.
