On Tuesday, a US military MQ-9 “Reaper” surveillance drone was hit by a Russian Su-27 fighter jet, causing it to crash into the Black Sea.
The US military condemned the incident as “unsafe”. The American spy drone was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a complete loss. The Russian fighter jets dumped fuel on the MQ-9 several times before the collision and flew in front of it in unsafe manoeuvres.
The US Air Force General overseeing the region called the act “unsafe and unprofessional” and said that it nearly caused both aircraft to crash. The incident follows a pattern of dangerous behaviour by Russian pilots, as they often operate near aircraft flown by the US and its allies over the Black Sea. President Joe Biden was briefed about the incident, according to White House spokesman John Kirby.
