In a dramatic turn of events, Russia announced on Monday that it successfully repelled a major assault launched by Ukraine in southern Ukraine’s Donetsk region. According to Russian authorities, the clash resulted in the deaths of numerous pro-Kyiv troops. The incident raises questions about whether this offensive signifies the long-awaited Ukrainian counterattack to reclaim territory seized by Russian forces following the invasion in February 2022.
The Russian defence ministry revealed that Ukraine initiated the attack with a formidable force consisting of six mechanized battalions and two tank battalions. The assault was concentrated in the southern Donetsk region, an area suspected by Moscow as a potential entry point for Ukrainian forces into Russian-controlled territory. In a statement posted on Telegram at 1:30 a.m. Moscow time, the defence ministry explained the situation.

“On the morning of June 4, the enemy launched a large-scale offensive in five sectors of the front in the South Donetsk direction. The enemy aimed to breach our defenses in the most vulnerable sector, as assessed by their strategy. However, the enemy failed to achieve its objectives.”
