Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov is currently in China to attend the meeting of foreign ministers from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). During his meeting with President Xi, Lavrov conveyed warm greetings and best wishes on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the ministry confirmed via an official statement on its website.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides held discussions on various matters concerning ongoing bilateral political engagements. These included preparations for President Putin’s anticipated visit to China later this year.
The Russian president is expected to travel to China in September to participate in the SCO Heads of State Summit. His visit will also include bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping and attendance at commemorative events scheduled for September 3, marking the anniversary of the Allied victory over Japan in World War II.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not attend the SCO Heads of State Summit in China, though no official confirmation has been issued yet.
