Leaders representing the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum are set to convene in San Francisco this month for the 30th APEC summit, marking the first time the United States has hosted the event since 2011.
Anticipated Focus of This Year:
Similar to numerous international forums, the APEC summit has evolved into a prominent arena for the strategic rivalry between the United States and China, the world’s two largest economies. The forthcoming bilateral meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected to occur on the sidelines of the summit, is highly awaited.
While Xi’s APEC attendance is yet to be confirmed, the potential summit would represent their second face-to-face meeting since Biden’s inauguration in January 2021. Their first encounter took place at the G20 summit in Bali one year ago.
The APEC leaders are scheduled to assemble from November 15 to 17. Preceding the summit, senior APEC finance officials and ministers will convene from November 11, and the annual APEC CEO summit is slated to run from November 14 to 16.
