Saudi Air Defences Intercept Missiles Over Riyadh Ahead of Key Regional Meeting

[post-views]

Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed four ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh on Wednesday, just hours before a high-level gathering of regional and Islamic foreign ministers in the capital.

According to the Defence Ministry, debris from the intercepted missiles fell in different parts of the city, but initial reports confirmed no casualties or damage. Residents reported hearing loud explosions, while many also received emergency phone alerts warning of a potential aerial threat—marking a rare experience for the capital.

State media earlier confirmed that Saudi forces had successfully responded to what it described as a “ballistic threat.” Since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran last month, Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone attacks, most of which officials say were intercepted.

Witnesses reported seeing missile interceptions in the western areas of Riyadh, particularly near the Diplomatic Quarter, which hosts foreign embassies.

The incident occurred shortly before Saudi Arabia hosted a consultative meeting of foreign ministers from several Arab and Islamic countries to discuss regional security amid the ongoing conflict. With no clear signs of de-escalation, the war continues to strain regional stability and disrupt global energy supplies.
