On Tuesday, a series of pager explosions in Lebanon killed 12 people and injured over 2,700. Just a day later, on Wednesday, another wave of device blasts killed nine people and wounded more than 300. Lebanese state media reported that walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members exploded in Beirut, with similar incidents in southern and eastern Lebanon. Additionally, solar panel systems also blew up in two cases.
These attacks are particularly horrifying because they use everyday devices to target civilians. Middle-East analysts attribute the attacks to Israel, following Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s updated war goals. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have been extremely high since October 7. This new method of attack marks a dangerous escalation in Israel’s tactics, crossing ethical and legal boundaries.

Reports suggest that Israel tampered with pagers being transported from Taiwan to Lebanon, turning them into deadly weapons. This tactic is reminiscent of the US National Security Agency’s (NSA) methods revealed by Edward Snowden in 2013. The explosions occurred in crowded markets and busy streets, affecting many civilians, including an eight-year-old girl. This incident highlights vulnerabilities in global trade and the impunity with which Israel operates in other nations’ affairs.
