Senator Sania Nishtar of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has officially resigned from her Senate position. Sources indicate that her resignation is linked to her recent appointment with an international organization based in Geneva, and she has already submitted her resignation to the Senate Secretariat.
Sania Nishtar is a well-known physician, cardiologist, writer, senator, and activist. Notably, in 2024, she took on the role of CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Previously, she served as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, focusing on poverty alleviation and social safety, during which she held the title of Federal Minister and led the Ehsaas Programme.
Elected to the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the 2021 elections, Nishtar has also been active in public service, having been part of the interim federal cabinet in 2013, where she managed areas like public health, education, and science.
In addition to her political roles, she chairs the International Advisory Board of the United Nations International Institute for Global Health and serves on the International Advisory Board on Global Health for the German Federal Government.
