In her quest for redemption, Japan’s defender Risa Shimizu is leaving no stone unturned, focusing on every minute aspect of the game to erase the bitter memories of the team’s lackluster performance in the 2019 campaign. With the upcoming Women’s World Cup in July and August, Shimizu is determined to make a lasting impact.
During the previous tournament in France, Shimizu featured in all of Japan’s matches. Despite finishing second in their group, the team’s journey ended in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands, who eventually reached the final. The outcome was a disappointment for a nation that had previously triumphed in the 2011 World Cup and finished as runners-up in 2015 against the United States.
Reflecting on the past, Shimizu expressed her frustration with the 2019 results and acknowledged the need for improvement this time around. “I feel that I have to do better,” said the 27-year-old, speaking to Reuters during the team’s pre-tournament training camp in Chiba.
