Sporadic Protests Spread Across Iran

[post-views]

Sporadic protests have erupted in Tehran and several other Iranian cities, according to local media reports, as unrest continues to simmer across the country. The demonstrations began on December 28, when shopkeepers launched a strike over worsening economic conditions. Within a week, the movement expanded in both size and purpose, with protesters increasingly raising political demands alongside economic grievances.

Al Jazeera correspondent Tohid Asadi reported from Tehran that the protests have not yet turned into a nationwide uprising. However, demonstrations have appeared intermittently in cities such as Tehran, Kazerun, and other urban centers. Since the protests began, at least 14 people, including members of the security forces, have been killed. Observers warn that tensions could escalate further if the government fails to introduce practical solutions to address public concerns.

Authorities described Saturday night’s protests in Tehran as limited, involving small groups of mostly young people. Demonstrations were reported in multiple districts across the capital, though no major incidents occurred beyond stone throwing and setting rubbish bins on fire. In contrast, violence intensified in western regions, particularly in Malekshahi, where clashes left security personnel and protesters dead.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei acknowledged the country’s economic difficulties and called for dialogue with protesters, while firmly warning that violent unrest would not be tolerated.
