Taiwan’s President, William Lai Ching-te, has issued a stark warning to military cadets about the growing threat from China, emphasizing the need to understand and resist the aggressive intentions of the mainland.
Lai, who has been a target of sustained criticism from Beijing since taking office, highlighted China’s efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty, including deploying aircraft in its airspace and conducting military drills in the region. He affirmed Taiwan’s determination to determine its own future and expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Beijing, although China has rejected these overtures.
Speaking at the Whampoa Military Academy’s 100th-anniversary event in Kaohsiung, Lai underscored the pressing challenges faced by Taiwan amid the escalating tensions with China. He emphasized the crucial role of the cadets in recognizing the gravity of the “new era,” particularly in confronting China’s aggressive actions, which seek to annex and eliminate Taiwan.
