Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Afghanistan is in mourning as former MP Mursal Nabizada and her bodyguard were shot dead at her home in the capital city of Kabul. According to police, the 32-year-old was one of the few female MPs who remained in Kabul after the Taliban took control of the country in August 2021. Her brother and another security guard were also injured in the attack.

Ms. Nabizada was a fearless champion for Afghanistan and refused to leave the country, despite the dangers she faced. Since the Taliban returned to power, women have been removed from nearly all areas of public life. The police have begun a thorough investigation into the incident and are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Former lawmaker Mariam Solaimankhil said Ms. Nabizada was “a true trailblazer – strong, outspoken woman who stood for what she believed in, even in the face of danger.” She added, “Despite being offered the chance to leave Afghanistan, she chose to stay and fight for her people.”

Ms. Nabizada was a member of parliament from Kabul, elected in 2018, and was a member of the parliamentary defense commission. She also worked at the Institute for Human Resources Development and Research. Her death has sparked outrage and condemnation from around the world.
