NEW DELHI: At least 36 people, including children, were killed in a stampede at a political rally in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, officials confirmed. The tragedy unfolded during a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur district, where tens of thousands had gathered.
Local media said the rally was delayed for several hours, leaving crowds restless. Shocking footage showed people collapsing and fainting in the packed venue. State minister Senthil Balaji said more than 50 others were injured and rushed to hospitals.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that the dead included at least 16 women, nine men, and six children. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced one million rupees compensation for families of the deceased and promised an inquiry into the disaster.
Families outside hospitals recounted heartbreaking scenes. “My brother’s two children were there. The elder passed away, the younger is missing. My sister-in-law is in ICU. What should I do?” one man told ANI news agency.
In an emotional statement, Vijay said his heart was “broken” and he was in “unbearable pain.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “deeply saddening.” Deadly crushes remain tragically frequent in India, with similar incidents reported this year at religious gatherings and stadiums.
